How Letting More Natural Light into Your Home Could Improve Your Health

in Home Improvement

You’ve probably heard that getting outdoors in the sunlight is good for you. You may even be one of the many people that struggle with seasonal depression in the winter time, in large part due to a lack of sunlight and vitamin D. But, getting outside isn’t always possible. Sometimes we’re busy with work or have a lot to do at home. Illness can prevent us leaving the house and some days; we simply don’t want to be outside because the weather isn’t great or we’re tired.

This is why it’s crucial that you let as much natural light into your home as possible by getting rid of your thick blackout curtains and adding some timber Venetian blinds. Here’s a look at some of the health benefits of letting more light into your home.

Better Air Quality

Damp, dusty air can have a negative impact on your health. It can make it hard to breathe and make conditions like asthma worse and mean that you get more coughs and colds and find it harder to recover. Damp air can also lead to the growth of mould in your home, which can also affect your health.

Get some leafy green houseplants and expose them to natural light to help them grow. This will improve the air quality in your home, making it easier to breathe and cutting the risk of damp spreading.

You’ll Feel Happier

Natural light can boost your mood massively. It can make you feel happier and more relaxed as well as reducing your stress levels. Just a little sunlight a day can make a vast difference.

Letting more light in also means that you’ll use less energy. This means that your bills will be significantly lower, which again, can reduce your stress levels.

You’ll Sleep Better

Natural light helps your body to produce melatonin. This helps your body regulate its sleep patterns. Letting more light in can mean that you sleep better, and that you start to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day, without assistance and that the quality of your sleep is better. This can improve your energy levels and mood.

To Boost Your Immunity

Vitamin D does a lot. It helps look after your skin and bones, and it boosts your immunity. Getting plenty of vitamin D means that you are less likely to be ill and that you’ll be able to recover much faster when you do. Your body absorbs vitamin D when sunlight hits your skin, but you don’t need to be outside for this to happen. Letting the light into your home can have the same effect.

To Improve Your Vision

Constant exposure to unnatural light, like that from TV and computer screens, is bad for your vision. To counteract this, expose them to natural light which can have a positive effect.

More natural light can improve your health, your mood, your vision and the efficiency of your home. So, open up and let as much in as you possibly can, even when it’s cold outdoors.
