This is a state we have all experienced at one point or another. The roller-coaster of emotions, the self-doubt that hinders your ability to move forward and the crushing weight of unmet expectations when all you want to do is quit. We’re all human, but if these occurrences are happening too often, then you need to put some plans in place to reignite the fire, so that you can stay motivated.

  1. Remember why you started

You set off down this course for a reason. Identify it, own it, and make sure you remember it each day. The 2019 weekly diary by Saint Belford includes a goal-setting section where you can journal your reasons WHY, and revisit them in those low moments. They do not need to remain static; in fact, you will have a better chance of honouring and subsequently achieving your mission if you add to and modify them along your journey. Grasping to these reasons will give you some light in those dark times. However, it’s also important to review them during joyful periods so you can attribute your success and build positive connotations.

  1. Create a routine

Staying motivated is hard, and we are all struck down at one point or another. A great way to keep on track is to Build a routine. Having a set time or allotted time each day to revisit your goals and plans will provide the consistency you may be lacking. This could be as simple as knowing that after breakfast on weekdays, you will set aside the time to dive into this project or task.

Creating a routine and sticking to it can improve your productivity, increase focus and reduce decision fatigue during the week. It won’t take long for you to notice the compounded benefits of routine, and with that comes the momentum, motivation and confidence to continue.

  1. Ask for support

We all have people that we turn to for support. You know, the ones with whom you can let out a long sigh and talk about your struggles. Make contact with them when you are feeling those familiar feelings of doubt, and ask for some support and advice during this time. Some people in our lives have the ability to lift us up at any turn, so why not use that? Perhaps they’ve gone through something similar and they can speak from personal experience. Connecting with others can sometimes be all your need to refill your motivation tank and get you back on track.

  1. Reset before you resign

Have you ever felt completely unmotivated, unable to do a single productive thing… until you took a bit of time out and returned to your desk? Sometimes you need some distance from a project in order to recharge and reset. Next time you think you are about to drop your bundle and throw your hands up, take a relaxing bath, meditate or get your heart rate up – anything that will take the focus away from work. You’ll find that doing this will renew your focus and replenish your motivation.

If you think that you are the only person who ever feels unmotivated, think again. It is a feeling and mindset that plagues us all at one point or another. Fortunately, it is not permanent so there is hope for us all yet! Our fire can be distinguished after a bad day, lousy feedback, and really anything that makes us wonder ‘why am I doing this again?’ So, reconnect with yourself and remember why you started, create a routine, ask for support and take a time out to reignite that fire.
