If you’re looking for an interesting and exciting place to visit, head to Camden. There’s so much to do there and it’s got a great vibe. It helps if you plan out your visit beforehand, because there are going to be so many places and things you’ll want to see. Here are the ten things you won’t want to miss when you go.
British Museum
A place once visited by Mozart, the British museum has plenty of exhibits for you to explore. In there you will find the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, an Easter Island statue, and even a prosthetic toe from 600 BC. Wonder around the museum to see all the other things they have on display. Fun fact: the museum only displays approximately 1% of its whole collection.
The British Library
As well as amassing an impressive collection of books, the library hosts talks, lectures and exhibitions. The British Library has many treasures, such as Charlotte Brontë’s manuscript of Jane Eyre, a letter written by Florence Nightingale, The Canterbury Tales manuscript by Chaucer and music by George Frideric Handel.
St Pancras Old Church
St Pancras Old Church is where Mary Wollstonecraft, the ‘mother of feminism’, and her husband were initially interred before they were moved by their daughter Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. If you’re on holiday, you’re going to want to get a hotel near the best transport links, like the Hotel Grand Royale Hyde Park London, to make it easier for you to get to places like this. This church is behind St Pancras Station, so it’s not hard to find.
Kings Cross Station
Though not technically in Camden, it would be a crime not to go to Kings Cross Station. It’s about a 25-minute walk outside of Camden Town, and while it’s probably an ideal place to catch a train back home at the end of a long day of shopping and walking, it’s also a popular tourist spot. Why? Because of Platform 9 ¾, which you’ll recognize from the Harry Potter film franchise. There’s a Harry Potter shop at the station where you can purchase official merchandise.
Regent’s Canal
You can hop on a boat and cruise down Regent’s Canal. It’s nice to walk or cycle along too, and there are many great stops along the way. You’ll probably pass by Camden Lock, part of Camden Market. You’ll also pass a garden centre, a natural park and the canal museum.
Camden Market
Arguably the most famous market in London, Camden Market is full of stalls and vendors selling everything from clothing and accessories to food and novelty gifts. You could easily spend your entire afternoon wandering through the shops and kiosks.
The Electric Ballroom
The Electric Ballroom is a popular venue and a lot of top bands and artists have performed there, like Paul McCartney, Prince, B52’s and The Clash. It’s the place to be on a Saturday night and the atmosphere is awesome. The Electric Ballroom has two floors and several bars.
ZSL London Zoo
The zoo is around the corner from The Chilworth London Paddington, making it one of the best places to say nearby. London Zoo attracts people from all over the world and is a fun way the spend the afternoon. They have animal demonstrations, a nature trail, and an adopt an animal programme.
Get some food
There are many restaurants and cafes to get a bite to eat and a quick drink, such as The Coffee Jar, Mango Room and The Blues Kitchen. Don’t rule out street food. Check out Bian Dang, Smokin’ Aces and The Mac Factory (for those who love macaroni and cheese). Not only is Camden known for it’s eclectic market place, but it’s also known for its delicious food.
Camden Catacombs
Purchase a ticket and roam around the various underground passages of the Camden Catacombs. The catacombs were never used as a burial place and the Victorian tunnels were instead used as a storage space and as stables for pit ponies. Due to flooding, a lot of it is closed off to the public, but the rest of it is very well preserved.
