Easy Alternatives: 5 Tips for Making the Tasks You Hate More Enjoyable

in Lifestyle

We all have to do things we don’t like, such as household chores, filing taxes, and working to support our lifestyles. As unenjoyable as these tasks are at face value, they don’t have to be so mundane that they sap every ounce of joy from your life.

You might not get pleasure from every chore or job, but you can make them slightly more enjoyable by employing the following strategies.

Hire Someone to Do Them for You

If you’re in a position to be able to hire someone to help with daily tasks and errands, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. For example, if you don’t want to spend countless hours poring over your online tax return, hire a tax professional to take care of the job for you.

Many people earn a living doing the jobs the average person doesn’t have the time or inclination to do, such as housework, yard work, and even basic house repairs. You can undoubtedly enjoy tasks much more when you don’t have to do them!

Break It Up

The very thought of cleaning your house from top to bottom might fill you with dread. When something you have to do is your least favourite task, you likely don’t want to dedicate several hours of your time to it.

However, it might become enjoyable or at least less terrible if you were able to break it up. For example, if you know you have to clean your bathroom, you might focus on the shower one day and the toilet the next. You can then spend the same amount of time on the chore, but it’s nestled between fun activities you do enjoy doing.

Bribe Yourself

Many parents bribe their children with the promise of park visits and sweet treats when they need them to do something they find unpleasant. This trick works on children, but it also works on us.

The next time you need to perform a mundane, time-consuming, or downright terrible job, bribe yourself to get it done. You might treat yourself to a well-deserved slice of cake after filing your taxes or a refreshing beverage when you’ve cut the lawn after No Mow May.

Make it worth your while to perform the task you hate, and you’ll find that you’re far more satisfied when it’s done.

Listen to Music

Some chores, such as scrubbing, mopping, and washing can be repetitive. Rather than fighting your way through them in silence, put on music, an audiobook, or a podcast you love, and allow these to distract you from the task at hand. Over time, you may even come to love these repetitive tasks as you know you can pick up your audiobook where you left off.

Do It with Friends and Family

Gardening, fence painting, and other time-consuming tasks can be boring when you’re by yourself. However, there’s no reason why you can’t get your closest friends and family members involved.

While you work, you can catch up on what has been happening in your life and get the job done much faster than if you had to do it by yourself. Just be sure to reward your loved ones for their efforts. Also, keep in mind that they may ask you to return the favour at some point!

There’s no way to get around tasks we hate, but we don’t have to be miserable while doing them. Take note of the tips above, and you should find yourself having much more fun than you thought possible.
